Introduction
About this Recipe
These buns were an attempt to find a sort of bun that was a staple in my home growing up but which, sadly, my mother could no longer remember and had lost the recipe for. They’re almost a sweetbread, made with butter, milk powder and sugar they are extremely versatile, making a perfect bun but also a great base for for a cheese roll, cinnamon bun or any sort of sweet or savour roll you can think of. I often split the dough into two parts and make two different types of bun. I make the dough in a bread machine and then shape and rise the buns to bake.
Ingredients
- 1 cup warm water
- 2 tablespoons butter (break into pieces)
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 Teaspoon salt
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 Teaspoons yeast
Step by Step Instructions
Step 1
Add all the ingredients into the bread machine pan in the order they appear. Set the Bread machine to Knead.
Step 2
Prepare two large cookie sheets with a splash of oil at the centre of each. When the Dough comes out, pour onto one of the sheets. Oil your hands as well. Split the dough in half and drop the half onto another oiled pan. Split each half into 8 pieces arranged at equidistant places on the sheet. Shape each piece into a round bun shape.
Step 3
Cover the buns with a clean cloth and let them rise for about a half hour until double. or use bread proofing mode on your oven for about 20 min with a pan of hot water at the bottom of the oven, no need to cover.
TIP
OVEN PROOFING METHOD if you don’t have a proof setting on your oven: if your air is particularly dry or you want to speed things up, you can proof them in your oven. Heat oven to 200°F and turn off. pour boiling water into an oven safe dish and place at the bottom of your oven. place the pans of buns in the oven with the door propped open. be sure to check every 10 minutes to see if the buns are double already.
Step 5
Once the buns are risen place them in the preheated oven at 375 F° and bake for 12 minutes.
