Country Steak with Chili Gravy
a family favourite that dates back to my childhood. Great food on a budget.

About this Recipe
It takes a little time but it’s worth it and can be made ahead of time, its even better when reheated. I believe this was a recipe my mother found on the back of a corn flakes box.
Ingredients
- 2 lb. Cheap, lean, beef steak, cut into serving pieces, and pounded thin to tenderize
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. pepper
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/3 cup flour
- 1 egg, beaten with 2 tbsp. water
- 1 c. finely crushed corn flakes
- 1 Tablespoon. chili powder
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 1 large garlic clove, minced
- 1 small green pepper, chopped
- 1/2 can diced tomato, pureed
Step by Step Instructions
Step 1
In a large bowl or plate combine flour, salt, pepper and 1 teaspoon chili powder. In a large shallow bowl beat the egg with the water. Place the corn flakes in another shallow bowl or plate. Coat the steak pieces in flour all over first, then the egg mixture and finally into crushed corn flakes.
Step 2
Heat the oil in a large skillet; brown coated meat pieces on both sides. Put the meat aside in a large casserole dish.
Preheat your oven to 375°F.
Step 3
Saute onion, green pepper and garlic until the onions and peppers are limp. Add 1 Tablespoon chili powder, salt, pepper and chili flakes to taste Pour in tomato sauce. Bring to a simmer and pour over the meat in the casserole dish. Bake for 45 min to an hour. Makes 5-6 servings
Step 4
serve with boiled potatoes and your favourite vegetable or a salad.
